Nursery Bunnies and Antique Cars

I know - I really do know - that nurseries are for parents, not babies. Meaning, that babies couldn't care less about color schemes, state of the art toys, or that totally hip and cool designer crib for which you paid $400. Babies need love, food, some clothing, and diapers. The rest is secondary.

My head knows this, but my heart is absolutely bent on having the perfect color-coordinated nursery. So I've taken up cross-stitching.

Or, rather, re-taken it up. I had an unfortunate encounter with it in my tender years which resulted in gnarled thread, a quite sudden loss of interest, and a still-unfinished Happy Mother's Day project. Sorry, mum.

Recently, however, I've had a renewed interest thanks to Martha Stewart. Look! Templates that are hip and modern and not, um, dated. Who can resist the appeal of tiny colorful animals?

A teeny-tiny poppy-red bunny. Tell me this is not cute.
My plan is to buy some 5" wooden embroidery hoops, paint them white, and hang them together in an adorable trio of furry friends. Except for the fish who, of course, is not furry.

Cross-stitching is super simple, by the way. Its repetitive motion is cathartic, and it's wonderfully inexpensive.

A sewing bag, needle packet, and the beginnings of a blue bunny.

Fun fact: in a bout of hormone fueled inspiration, I made the above sewing bag and needle packet by hand. In six hours. Right before a long trip. Totally didn't pack until late that night because somehow this was way, way more important.

But I felt awesome cross-stitching on the plane, so there.

Also: a few other things for nursery walls. These antique cars were a steal! I found them at Dover's website for $3.95! (They're on sale now for even less, btw.) They're colorful and detailed, and will go perfectly in a white frame with some white matting.

I'm not really sure how or if all of this will work together, but we shall see!

  1. Airports give old people the run around with their pills and they give nursing mothers problems with bottles of milk... yet they let you on the plane with needles??? You have skills. I love that you are making cool things for your little one. Cross stitching is awesome!! And the old car prints are too :)
